That Crazy Crippled Chick: This Is What Disability Binarism Looks Like

See this meme below…it’s vile. Please read the linked blog post by That Crazy Crippled Chick.

This kind of judgmental bullshit needs to stop…this kind of meme is just mean spirited and nasty. Do you know why this person is in a chair…do you know if they have neuromuscular issues? Do  you know if they have bad arthritis but are able to stand for a minute to get something from a shelf in a store. Stop being assholes on the internet and call people out on these memes.

Disability Binarism …learn what it is…we’re neither fish nor foul. I have MS…I’ve gone months where I couldn’t carry a laundry basket upstairs…I’ve had good stretches of time where I’ve had no major flares and haven’t had to use my cane in months or maybe even a couple of years. This does not make me a phony when I have to use my can or beg off of attending a function because I’m too fatigued to even get off the sofa.

Don’t be that dick on the internet that posts this everywhere because you think it’s funny or a statement about those abusing benefits. You truly don’t know and you certainly aren’t in full awareness about the woman in this meme’s health history. Be the hero who calls people out on this…point out to them they have no idea of others’ medical histories and have no business judging people.

Think about who’s in jail and why.

This was how the myth of Black criminality started, for the record. After the abolition of slavery, a lot of states made laws targeting Black people specifically, and then put them on chain gangs to get free labor from them.

Oh, and the US is still disproportionately incarcerating Black people and private prisons are making huge amounts off them.

Yeah, I believe that black people are twice as likely to be arrested and convicted for committing the same crimes as a white person. Draw your own conclusions.

That time that I made a shitty text graphic of a Warren Ellis quote instead of doing any of my work.
This will be stuck to the corkboard above my desk while I write my undergraduate thesis, because I’m going to need the reminder.

From the clever to the downright horrifying.

Vintage Halloween Costumes

So awesome…I hate today’s Halloween offerings; glittery princesses, cheerleaders, hero costumes, cutesy animals (toddlers exempted of course).

imperfectwriting:

I went to the mall, and a little girl called me a terrorist.

My name is Ela.  I am seventeen years old.  I am not Muslim, but my friend told me about her friend being discriminated against for wearing a hijab.  So I decided to see the discrimination firsthand to get a better understanding of what Muslim women go through.

My friend and I pinned scarves around our heads, and then we went to the mall.  Normally, vendors try to get us to buy things and ask us to sample a snack.  Clerks usually ask us if we need help, tell us about sales, and smile at us.  Not today.  People, including vendors, clerks, and other shoppers, wouldn’t look at us.  They didn’t talk to us.  They acted like we didn’t exist.  They didn’t want to be caught staring at us, so they didn’t look at all.

And then, in one store, a girl (who looked about four years old) asked her mom if my friend and I were terrorists.  She wasn’t trying to be mean or anything.  I don’t even think she could have grasped the idea of prejudice.  However, her mother’s response is one I can never forgive or forget.  The mother hushed her child, glared at me, and then took her daughter by the hand and led her out of the store.

All that because I put a scarf on my head.  Just like that, a mother taught her little girl that being Muslim was evil.  It didn’t matter that I was a nice person.  All that mattered was that I looked different.  That little girl may grow up and teach her children the same thing.

This experiment gave me a huge wakeup call.  It lasted for only a few hours, so I can’t even begin to imagine how much prejudice Muslim girls go through every day.  It reminded me of something that many people know but rarely remember: the women in hijabs are people, just like all those women out there who aren’t Muslim.

People of Tumblr, please help me spread this message.  Treat Muslims, Jews, Christians, Buddhists, Hindus, Pagans, Taoists, etc., exactly the way you want to be treated, regardless of what they’re wearing or not wearing, no exceptions.  Reblog this.  Tell your friends.  I don’t know that the world will ever totally wipe out prejudice, but we can try, one blog at a time.
